That they are quiet. That they keep to themselves. That their small talk often ends before it has even really begun. There is a bit of truth in all of this. And yet, when we think about Estonian history, it is clear that throughout the ages the people have managed to get by precisely because they have stuck together and supported one another. So are Estonians really as introverted as they like to claim?

Estonians enjoy organizing Midsummer celebrations, village days, community clean-up days, group runs, choir rehearsals, sports clubs, song festivals, and festivals of all kinds. For people who are supposedly more likely to stand than sit down next to a stranger on the bus, they handle closeness surprisingly well when it involves, for example, half-naked and sweaty people on a sauna bench. They may not greet their neighbor in the stairwell, but at the same time they greet everyone they pass on a hiking trail. To a large extent, this simply has to do with the fact that Estonians need some shared activity or common purpose to bring them together, rather than with any unwillingness to communicate. So how can people from a different cultural background adapt to a community where people may at first seem so reserved that you are not quite sure whether they are being polite to you or simply waiting for you to leave?

As is well known, Estonians are not always the strongest when it comes to chit-chat or casual conversation. Their directness can often be read as reluctance, because they are not used to talking about seemingly trivial things and tend to answer polite questions either very briefly or, on the contrary, in far too much detail. At the same time, adaptation does not happen only through language textbooks, digital services, and official guidelines. A very large part of it comes through everyday interaction: with that one neighbor, colleague, parent, training partner, or friend who knows how to translate not only words, but also unwritten rules — for example, that when visiting someone’s home, you should take off your shoes even if the hosts say, “keep them on” or that “normaalne” can mean many different things.

It is through such small details that “our people” begin to emerge. Not necessarily best friends for life, but communities where people feel at ease. Sometimes these are simply the people you always run into at the local shop, or the people you always go to the sauna with after a workout. Sometimes they are someone you know are good hiking buddies, people whose children are the same age as yours, or someone who is happy to guide you through your new pottery hobby or the art of making sourdough bread.

A social divide does not always arise from opposition. Sometimes it emerges simply because people do not come into contact with one another. One group thinks the others keep to themselves. Those others think the first group does not want to let them in. And so communities can end up living side by side without ever truly meeting. Solving this does not necessarily require grand gestures. Sometimes all it takes is a small step toward openness: showing a little more interest in your colleague’s day, inviting your neighbors over, talking to your training partner after practice. One person who takes the first step.

 <div class="elementor-element elementor-element-6cd2ef60 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con
